what it's all about

i often find myself asking out loud: "why do people who aren't mormon get married?"
i know, it seems lame and judgmental, but i promise you it is not. by societies standards, i married very young. but by mormon standards, at a respectful age. i wasn't engaged before my high school graduation, but i was hitched before college graduation.
baker would probably point out here that the before college graduation was easy for me since i never did. but for my own reasons, and reasons that i wont post here because one day my kids will probably read this and try to give me the same sob story.. which i wont accept. i was pushed in a different direction at that time in my life which i am very grateful for. this post being one of them.
i digress.
my church strongly believes in family. which is one of my favorite aspects of it. we believe that it isn't "til death do us part", but for "time and all eternity". like it or not, our lives together don't end when we leave this world. so knowing, and most importantly, BELIEVING this always makes me wonder. if i didn't know or believe, what would be the point?
in other words... live it up!
date without the commitment, live life without the responsibility, and for once be selfish! doesn't that sound like a dream? do what you want, when you want, and how you want. sounds great right? i'm sure it is. for a little while. because my friends, i'm sure it would get old. and lonely.
the reality of it all is that til death or for eternity, our time on this green earth could be long. and who wants to spend it alone? and although i've known it all along, after 4 years TODAY i can say:
this is what it's all about.
the love, the partnership, the arguing, the serving, the raising kids, the work, the everyday daunting tasks that would be boring alone, the growing, the learning, the compromising, the sacrificing, the attraction, the admiring, the you name it.... this is what it's all about.
4 years and two 2 kids later i know why people get married. life is better with a partner. in all aspects.
truth be told, i was lost before i met baker. ask anyone. where my life was going, or where i wanted it to be going was a mystery. i was in a dark place, and baker was that tiny flick of light, just what i needed, to pull it together. as cheesy as it sounds. it's true. there is no denying it.
and although he gives me many reasons to confirm that i made the right choice with him, just this week i was reminded again. my kids are sick. like really sick. like rsv turned pneumonia and two bouts of croup sick. it hasn't been fun, and to top it all off in the last few days.. i've gotten sick. even less fun. but like always baker comes in like a knight in shinning armor after a very very long day of work (5:30am departure and 7:30pm arrival, with a sleepless night before). and though i am sure that he is tired and run down and wants nothing more then to go to bed himself, he still manages to accomplish the following:
bathed the kids
administered medication
took out the trash
did the dishes
took emmy to the store for some daddy daughter time
gave dane a little extra attention
let me pick the show
and still made a point to let me know he was still into me after i slummed around all day and barely managed to brush my teeth let alone my hair.
i would like to believe that he does it because there is nowhere else he would rather be. unless of course it's thursday.... that's softball night. but seriously. i think we are THAT into eachother, and at the end of the day no matter what we are faced with, we would rather do it together. so like i said before
that is what it's all about.
the faith of knowing and believing that it doesn't end here for us is just the icing on the cake.
baker-
i love you. thanks for being everything i ever wanted in a partner. for being my rock. for pushing me and supporting me in things i never thought possible on my own. thank you for being hands down "the worlds best dad", and for always putting us first. thank you for making up for areas that i lack. for holding the priesthood and fulfilling all the responsibilities that come with it. and most importantly thank you for loving me. life started when i married you, and if this is what life could be after only 4 years i can not wait to see what we can do after another 50. i love you. lip smacking and all.
love
me
ps. happy anniversary

Although I'm not Mormon, I completely believe in everything you said about marriage. I too can't remember what my life was like before Brent. Although we have been together for almost 14 years and married for 4 he is everything. There isn't a day I don't thank God for him and our beautiful Sophia.

What a contemplater you are! I love this post. So true to the core. What a great life: good and bad.
After sitting down and eating a dinner my wife and I cooked together, we started talking about how great it is to be in love and married and friends. How close we feel and how much closer than the 7 months ago when we were married in the seattle temple...while it's hard to imagine anyone feeling the love we feel for each other, heart-felt honesty and your skill in expression remind us that the plan is alive and thriving and we can't help but look at each other and believe a little more than we already did that we can make it together not just with joy, but with the amazing joy that can't be written or shown or even known until one looks back like you did and realize it's truly better than anything you ever could have imagined. Thanks. - the Quigleys.
